A little bit of research on Boeing and their Public Relations:

Boeing

9 Dec

Boeing is a big time company that brings up many different ideas in the head of the average American.  Maybe one thinks of the huge Boeing 747 airplanes that carried many people very far through the airways.  Maybe one thinks of the work that Boeing has done with the Apollo missions to space through its work with NASA.  One also might think of a high powered company that is always on the cutting edge of technology, and that it employs a large number of smart engineers, and that it produces many of the technological weapons that keep democracy safe.   And many think of it as weapons producing war profiteering company that has a large interest in keeping America and the rest of the world invested in the industry of war.  These many sides of Boeing are what America has in its mind.   What is the truth?

According to its own website http://www.boeing.com/, “Boeing is the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems.”    They are proud to be one of the largest exporters in the United States, and are an international company with offices in Moscow. Hong Kong, London, along with employees in 70 other countries.  They spend much effort on their website to promote the fact that they are a company that looks out for their employees and the world.  Diversity and working conditions are at core of their values.   Boeing states that there workers are to always be in safe conditions and that they will be paid well for their work no matter where they are working.    They state on their website they always take the environment into account when they do their work.  They are striving to be more environmentally friendly every day.

Quality, Integrity and Leadership are values that they promote on their website, along with customer satisfaction.  Boeing website offers to the community to come take a tour and see all the technologically wonderful things that are happening at Boeing.  They invite people in, and they are asking to be liked.

When first looking at the website I could not help but feel that it is being hyped up a bit.  I in the beginning of the space age Boeing was probably seem as something as a marvel.  They were building the best planes, and helping to send people to space.  But I feel that as America’s war spending increased, so did America’s questions about Boeing.  My initials thought about them team over to the negative, because of the weapons manufacturing.   Something in the back of my mind links them with Halliburton and back room deals.  But Boeing is a large and powerful company; they have a top notch website that promotes them as world leader in their industries.  What are they doing to keep a positive image on the web, and how do they deal with negative comments.  Let’s take a look.

Starting with the ever popular Facebook where one can find many Boeing related pages.  There is a Boeing store that sells Boeing merchandise and models.  People post pictures of the model planes that they put together, and people can rave about how great they look.  It is great place for aspiring engineers to get together.  It is all very positive promotion for Boeing.

They also have a Facebook employment page where they have job info available.  There are people posting on the page about how much they love working for Boeing and that it is a great place to be a part of.  It is again all very positive.  It is smart idea to put all this out there.  They treat their employee’s right and then their employees feel good about posting on the site.  It would make me feel good about applying there, and it goes along with one of their values of having a positive work space.

There are also many pages set up about the many different planes made by Boeing.  I do not think that they were set up by Boeing, but they serve as positive PR none the less.

The only negative thing seen on Facebook was a link to an article in the post about recent labor issues that was in the Washington Post.  Most people siding with Boeing in the comment section.

The defense side of Boeing was hardly mentions and it took some work on Facebook to find a page about it.  There was no place to post on this website, but telling was that only 273 people had likes this page, but over 30,000 liked a page about the Boeing Dreamliner, one of its newer planes.

On Twitter Boeing again have multiple sites set up for its different divisions, but it is all positive stuff coming from them.  I don’t see much responding or feedback.  The main focus is promoting new products and upcoming events.

YouTube provides more of the same.  There are many videos about different planes that they have made, and space equipment.  There page has people posting about how much they love Boeing and asking if they can get a job.  It is all a lot of positive PR.  The videos on the site also are impressive, and it is easy to see how a tech person could really get into it.  They also have customer reviews on YouTube, and this is a great way to let the public know if their products really work.  And the clincher is a video showing Boeing employees doing community service that impacts the areas around their plants and offices.  This shows people that Boeing does care about the people and communities and is not just there to make money.  The impact of the videos is one the viewer to believe that Boeing is a cutting edge company that is trying to make the future better through its technology, but also through its devotion to the people in the community.

Blogs and other aspects all seem very positive, from what I can find.  There is an occasional talk about a labor issue, or a patent infringement, but most of the outlooks look good for Boeing.  They have a positive image in the corporate world.  They are doing a good job of focusing their PR efforts into building Boeing as a brand that is invested in the future of the world.  All this runs counter to all their works on weapons for defense, but I guess even calling the defense department the defense, space and security department is a bit of PR magic.  The word defense is much more benign than weapons, and tying it in with space in security is even better.

All in all I feel that Boeing is taking the lead with its image on the web.  They control the content, and react quickly.  They have multiple spaces on different sites so that you come across them first before you see anything independent.   They are in control.

preperations

Next weekend my girlfriend and I are hiking across Maryland on the A.T.  We start at the Penn-Maryland border on our feet and don’t stop walking until we get to Harper’s Ferry West Virginia.  Now it is only 42 miles, so it’s not that long of a trip, but the idea to walk across the whole state is pretty cool to me.   To think that we are ready for this next challenge makes me realize how much work we put into these trips.  Packing the gear and hiking the trail is only the half of it.  Everyday we both work hard to grow stronger.

Things we need.

Backpacks?  Check.  Sturdy shoes?  Check.  Water filter?  Check.  Sleeping bag, tarp, warm clothes, cool clothes, rain gear, food, water bottles, first aide, sleeping pads, cook stove and utensils, tent, maps?  Check, check, check.  All of these things we carry on are back for 42 miles, up mountains, over streams, and through the woods.  We got what we need, but are we ready.

Legs? check.   Every day, 3 miles on treadmill, 3 miles on the elliptical, and walking the dogs.  Weekend hikes and lifting weights.  Everyday it add up, and we get stronger.  3 years ago we were couch potatoes.  We went to every new movie and got popcorn and soda.  What a change, I haven’t been to the movies in a year.  Instead we grow stronger, and I am ready for this next challenge.   Life is good.

What lies ahead

2 Oct

I used to struggle with technology quite a bit.  Gadgets just don’t appeal to me very much.  I think it is all the technical talk, and the one-ups-man ship that goes along with it.  People going on and on about their new doohickey and how much power it has and what functions it can handle.  I quite frankly don’t give a crap about it all.  I just want something that work to do my job the best way.  And I am seeing more and more that jobs these day are going to require the ability to use all the technology the best way possible.  Even if that jobs means getting out into nature.

When I hike I usually do it get away from all the stress of modernization and to have an adventure.  I wan to be able to share that adventure with others, and to broadcast out what it is that I am seeing.  The best way to do that is bring the technology into nature.  Taking the time after a long days hike to send a tweet instead of writing in a journal.  By updating my status on Facebook from a back country camp fire I can share what I am doing and give people a window into a world that many of them don’t see.

But I have got to get better at the technology.   There are charger for laptops and phone that use the rays of the sun to charge.  That stuff is all there, for me to learn to use, and most of it is user-friendly.  Now I have to take the time to post a blog entry and tweet everyday.  I need to expand my on-line networks and engage them into what I am doing.  It is a way to do it these days that is right in front of me.  I must choose to take advantage of the tools that are here for me to use, so I can share it with the world.

Dam Half Marathon

18 Sep

What a beautiful day, although it started a bit cold,  to run through the woods.   13.1 miles, half a marathon, done.  One step at a time….

Every day I make sure I get to the gym, I get on the treadmill or the elliptical or I play basketball.  I lift weights and I sweat like a crazy man for an hour and a half.  Despite everything else I got going on, working two jobs, raising my son and school, all things that have to take a priority over exercising, I still get make sure that I get my workout in.  It means I sleep less.  It means my knees sometimes ache.  It means that I spend that much less time at home.   It means I have more laundry to do.  But despite all of that it is worth it, so very worth it.

I used to go back and forth, exercising for about 6 months at a time, and then taking breaks.  Really long breaks, 6 months to a year.  But it has been a continuous two years of exercising now and I am so happy that I have kept it going.  Today was a good culmination of that hard work.

The Dam Half Marathon takes place in R.B. Winter State Park in Clinton County.  It is about 45 mins. away from State College.  It is a trail race.  Which means that it is not flat.  You climb over boulders, dodge tree limbs and trip over rocks and roots as you race over mountains.  It is a challenging course.  Over 2000 feet of elevation gain is no joke.

I worked last night until 4 am, so I was concerned about fatigue, but I was surprised at my strength.   I did not stop, I pushed hard the whole time.  One foot in front of the other, I ran and climbed, and ran and climbed.  It felt great.

Knowing that I have the energy and strength for these races, I know that I will reach all my goals.  One step at a time.  Back to work tonight I go, staying up all night, then back to class, then back to the gym, and then to pick up my son at school.  One step at a time. Running…..

Next year maybe I’ll take the next step, a full marathon.  I can do it……..

uphill battle

4 Sep

I love to be outside, in the woods, away from it all.  It’s funny because I grew up in an Urban area, and really did not get out into the woods much.  My dad is not a hunter or a fisherman, and my mother would not be caught dead in a tent.  My family did not go camping, no way, no how.

Yet I, more and more, spend as much as my free time(what little there is of it) as possible hiking, camping, backpacking.

I am a novice for sure, still learning on every trip I take.

Last  August 27, 2011 I hiked part of Rothrock State Forest here is Centre County, PA.  We are lucky to have so many trails near us, and the system in Rothrock is one of the best and most challenging.   For our typical Saturday outing my girlfriend Becky and I packed up our two dogs and parked at the Galbraith Gap lot which is just past Tussy Mountain Fun Center of Highway 322 coming out of State College Eastbound.

We then started on the The Galbraith Gap trail that leads you uphill until you come between the Longberger Path and the Spruce Gap Trail.  The Longberger path is a fairly easy trail that will lead you to The Bear Meadows Natural Area.  It is mostly flat, although rocky at times.  Many people run along that trail.  But that is not what we were in for.

We were climbing the Spruce Gap Trail, which is one of the harder climbs in the area.  We had already climbed a bit to get to this junction, and now the fun was going to begin.   The climb is about 3/4 of  mile long from this point and as you climb you keep getting to places where you think “this has to be the top, there is no way that it can climb any higher,” only to be disappointed when it keeps going steadily uphill.   Rocks slide from under your feet as you climb and you wonder to yourself, why am I not sitting on my couch right now, messing around on Facebook.  This is the mental part of climbing mountains, because you can easily turn around.  Nobody is making you climb this thing, I could have go

ne and taken the nice flat Longberger Path.

These were the thoughts that raced through my head that morning, lucky my little Pit Bull Bertha was with me.   She was tired, but she kept right on climbing, and together we made it to the top without stopping.  I was drenched in sweat as I turned and saw Becky and our other dog Stella close behind, making it up the last stretch of incline.  We had made it the top of our first big climb of the day, and were now standing on the Mid-State trail that cuts across Pennsylvania.  I gave the dogs some water, told Bertha she was a good mountain dog and we turned and went right on walking.    That climb totaled one mile of the eleven we were planning for the day.  I felt good, and I felt alive.  I was ready for what ever challenge came next.
